The first interview will be a chance for you to talk freely and get to know the person. You should find out about any interesting stories and what they do, or do not, want to record permanently. The second interview will be the one where a permanent record will be made (audio, video, digital photo). Somebody else will record this for you. Agree where you will be meeting. The first interview Make them feel welcome. Introduce yourselves briefly and remind them a little about the project: we are building a record of members of our local community who have come to Britain and some of the stories they have to tell. Ask them if they mind if you make an audio recording of your conversation - this will be helpful for you. Encourage them to talk about their past country - particular things that they remember this could be people, events, objects, et cetera. Listen to them. Be supportive. Ask open questions. One of you should make a note of the topics that they talk about so that you know which are most interesting. Explain that you would like to meet them for a second time. Put their contact details and the best times for the interview onto the interview form. Talk with them about the type of record that they would like: a digital photo, edited parts of a video of the interview, an audio recording or just a written account. Do they have an object (something special to them from their country) that they could bring to the second interview? Note this on the form. Which parts of their story do they feel most comfortable about sharing with other people? Ask them to sign the permission form (different ones for adult/ child). Thank them for their time. Follow up Look at the notes you have made and discuss which parts of the persons story you find interesting and which parts you think they would be willing to talk about in the second interview. The purpose of this is to collect a permanent record of the persons story and experiences. There is likely to be a teacher who will help you with this. Welcome the person again.
